Jacquie

A rising star of the national synchronized swimming team, Jacqueline Simoneau won a pair of gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games, standing atop the podium in the team and duet competitions (with partner Karine Thomas). Simoneau first joined the national team in 2012 when she was still a junior competitor. That year she won a bronze medal in the solo event at the FINA World Junior Championships. Simoneau improved to the silver medal position at the 2014 World Juniors. She made her FINA World Championship debut in 2013, competing in the team events, after which she also began competing in the duet event. Getting to compete at the Olympic Games is one of Simoneau’s life goals, along with being a doctor. She made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, finishing seventh in the duet with Thomas.

GETTING TO KNOW THE ATHLETE

  • Family: Parents Robert Simoneau and Lynda South-Simoneau… Younger brother Christian…

  • Getting into the Sport: Started synchro at age 8… At one point did all four water sports; narrowed it to synchro and diving and then chose to focus on synchro…

  • Outside Interests: Enjoys cooking, baking, learning anatomy, shadowing doctors, reading, golf, horseback riding… Health sciences studies at Vanier College on hiatus for Olympic season… Graduated Massey Vanier High School in 2013…

  • Odds and Ends: Sports idols include Kyle Shewfelt and Natalia Ischenko (three-time Olympic champion)… Has a very special water bottle for good luck in competition… Always hugs her coach before competing so the routine will go well… Always travels with a bear and a necklace given by her parents… Collects snow globes from every country she visits and now has about 20…

  • Favourite motto: Mens sana in corpore sano (Latin for “a sound mind in a sound body”)…

Gwen McGuireIn her second year of synchronized swimming, Gwendolyn McGuire was given the opportunity to go to the Prague Christmas Cup, an event that she stills cherishes to this day : “It was a great competition where I was able to watch some of the best athletes from around the world. This was a highlight for me since it was my first time at an international competition and it inspired me to train to be as good as they were”. In 2015, she swam and won silver with Team Alberta at Canada Winter Games. She enjoyed it because “it was really different from regular competitions and I loved being able to have that experience”. The same year, she represented Canada for her first time with the Junior National Team at the UANA PanAms in Calgary, a highlight of her career so far.

GETTING TO KNOW THE ATHLETE

  • Getting into the Sport: Did diving before changing to Synchro. She saw synchronized swimmers during a practice and decided to try out a synchro camp. Instantly fell in love with the sport!

  • Why she loves Synchro: “Until I was eleven years old I did all kinds of sports – diving, swimming and cheerleading. I loved them all. Synchro brought together all the sports I loved. It combined the artistic aspects of cheerleading, but I was still able to swim in the water!”
